My heart is full as I return from a functional medicine conference and retreat where I expanded my knowledge and connections with other like minded souls. Being with individuals who are curious and passionate about healing is so nurturing for me and provides me with a warm sense of belonging. As social creatures, humans have an innate need to belong. You may not notice it at a conscious level, but this need runs deep. In fact, your choices often originate from a subconscious level and that deep desire for belonging. For example, for many individuals, choosing healthy food goes against their cultural norm and their memories of what brought them comfort and joy during their formative years growing up. They’d rather belong than choose differently so it is often easier to follow their community’s choices.  Dressing differently, behaving differently, having different beliefs than others may create a sense of disconnection to those around you. Instead of being authentically you, you may follow the standard quo to fit in without actually realizing why. This is completely normal as humans are hardwired this way. When we belong to a tribe, we feel supported, we have a sense of purpose, and we don’t feel so alone. Having a sense of community and belonging can actually improve our wellbeing.

Quote about finding your tribe

While there are many pros to wanting to belong, there are some disadvantages as well. As Jim Rohn states “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” Whoever you spend most of your time with will influence the choices you make.  Essentially, you become like the people you surround yourself with. Take time to think about who you are sharing your time with. What do they choose? How do they perceive life? Do they make you feel uplifted? Do they inspire you? Do they support you and your truth?

The people you want to surround yourself with should feed your soul and help you grow into your authentic self. This might mean some people who have been on your journey thus far may not be the best fit to continue alongside you as you develop a greater understanding of what helps you be the best version of you. It may be painful to let them go, but some goodbyes may be necessary for your ultimate growth and expansion. You are here to thrive, to love and to experience happiness and that might mean releasing what you have perhaps outgrown.

Become aware of what you really need in life and who you’re meant to be. Take note of your goals, dreams and aspirations and what it’s going to take to get you there. Once you understand your dreams and start walking in your truth, surround yourself with people who live life in a way that you want to live.  Find the people who are going to shine clarity on your hopes and dreams. Create a tribe that will leave you feeling empowered and enriched with positivity.
